as for the other vegetables, i've been putting them to good use. here are a few of photos of what's been cooking in the kitchen. i'll be making these dishes again this week, though i'm not so sure about the fried green tomatoes. they were really good and easy to prepare, but i'm craving spicy and refreshing foods lately.

dubu chigae with hobak (tofu zucchini stew)
i've had several talks with my mom about this dish--i think it's more like a soup (gook) than a stew (chigae) because of the broth. i tried to explain to her why it should be called dubu gook and she laughed. i should have known better. i can't argue with her, it is what it is. i posted the recipe on openfoodsource.com and will try to add more in the future, if anyone's interested.
i can't believe my dad's side of the
family is from the south and i had never tried fried green tomatoes until
earlier this year.
my first taste was at gladys & ron's chicken and waffles. it was so good and that's all i had talked about and wanted for days.
since then, i've tried it a few times but only at a place called
folks. it's a small chain of restaurants and they serve pretty good southern food. i can't complain.
oh, there was one experience that did leave me
speechless and shaking my head as we left. i had gone to the
bathroom and i thought my eyes were playing tricks on me from the poor
lighting--it
sure as hell looked like someone
threw barbecue sauce all over the toilet AND the floor in one of the
stalls. i hate to say this but at the time, i thought i had walked
into the men's bathroom because there was no way a woman could have done
that. i even looked around for urinals. nope. i
thought it was a joke but no, that wasn't bbq sauce i smelled when i
first walked in. the gagging commenced and it was too late to
make a run
for the door. i had started to but realized i couldn't leave
without washing my
hands. thank god for paper towels because i don't know how else i
would've opened the door to get out. we haven't gone back to
that location since!
sorry...i should be talking about fried green tomatoes. so last night a bunch of
us (my brother and a few friends) got
together for dinner at a "cleaner" place called mick's.
this was my first time there and it looked
like an upscale diner. after we sat down, the casual atmosphere
started to sink in and everyone's food looked and smelled
wonderful. apparently the peach cobbler is one of the the best in
the area but they weren't
serving any last night (or the last two weeks for that matter).
it was pretty obvious how disappointed we were since we started talking
about where we could go for dessert--all before ordering anything to
drink! typical of us to think about dessert before the actual
meal. finally looked at the menu and no one had told me about
mick's fried green tomatoes. umm, hello!
so we had started with an order of dream rolls and fried green
tomatoes. the dream rolls dipped in curry sauce were very
good. but yet again, all i talked about were the fried green
tomatoes since the rest of the
meal
was...eh. i had the
creole pasta, but all i could think about were the fried green
tomatoes. it came topped with a special
russian dressing, sprinkled with goat cheese. definitely the best
i've tasted so far and our friend K
helped describe it as "crackalicious." that also described the
heath bar ice
cream pie, three layer chocolate
cake and deep dish apple pie we all shared. yep, we
caved and stayed for dessert. i'm already planning my next
fix.
i found some southern comfort at mick's but now i feel
like it's my mission to find, and try, every place in atlanta that
serves fried green tomatoes. i'm sure this is just a temporary
obsession until i can find a good recipe :)
