i've been humming these off and on for the last hour. thanks, grrrace. ;)
The QotD (Bring Back the Snack), and my friend's comment that she ALSO loved Bonkers! candy, got me thinking about my favorite years growing up. The 80's. Let's see what I can remember...and in no particular order :)
For starters, shopping at Gaylord's
and Howard's department stores. Yes, I wore leg-warmers and not
to
mention, my hair-do(nt) achieved great heights thanks to Rave
hairspray! Fuscia was my favorite color and I wish I had a
picture of the dress with the big jewel-like buttons to prove it.
Oh believe you me, that was my feel good dress of the decade! My
brother and I watched a lot of TV. I will go so far as to say
that our babysitter was a 19" Sony Trinitron television with a
jacked-up
remote control. Unfortunately, it fell on a paper trap, the kind
that was
used to catch mice back at our old house--it was the more *humane* way
to
practice pest control back then. BUT, the remote fell on the
sticky trap by accident. We tried to get the glue off but never
used it again. So, we'd pick a channel and leave it there for
hours. Both
our parents worked (dad was in
the Army and mom worked odd jobs) so Nickelodeon, PBS, and later on MTV
and BET would keep us preoccupied. We watched a lot of Pinwheel
and
Today's Special. By far, the Pinwheel shorts were my
favorite! Alfie, Bunny in the Suitcase, Simon in the Land of
Chalk Drawings, Hattytown. I miss the cartoon claymations and
puppets--I urge Nickelodeon to bring back some of that good old stuff,
or at
least show some re-runs! Anyway, I'm
pretty sure a lot of these shows were fodder for my whacky but creative
imagination. Oh, and I can't forget Sesame Street, Electric
Company and Captain Kangaroo. I loved school, but boy did I
looked
forward to waking up so I could watch morning cartoons like
Thundercats, Silverhawks, Voltron, He-man or She-Ra. Well, it
wasn't just cartoons. Three Stooges and The Little Rascals were
in the morning mix. Then,
after school I'd hurry home to catch The Flintstones and Tom &
Jerry. My favorite day of the week, of course, was Saturday. More
cartoons to fill my brain--Shirt Tales, Smurfs, Get Along Gang, The
Littles, Gummy Bears, My Little Pony, Care Bears, X-men, Spider-man and
Bettlejuice to name a few. As I got older, around the 5th and 6th
grade, cartoons started to take a back seat to a new addiction...music
videos. Thanks MTV and BET for making me SO fashionably forward
in elementary and middle school. Talk about pressure!
Instead of coming home to watch cartoons, the TV was blaring music and
videos by Fat Boys, Kwame, Kool Moe Dee, New Edition, Salt N Peppa,
A-ha, Duran Duran, Twisted Sister, ZZ Top, Bananarama, Art of
Noise... OMG, and how obsessed was I to record the videos on my
dad's Betamax so I could learn how to dance! LOL, I wish that
thing was still working--I still have a few episodes of Jem and the
Holograms on a tape somewhere. Wow. I can't believe I'm
about to say this but I learned how to moon-walk and do the kick-worm
thanks to the trusty old Beta! Geez, I have goosebumps thinking
about all of this. Well, I'm sure I could go on and on but
really, I think I'll keep the rest of my reverie to myself...at least
for my own sake. The kick-worm. How embarassing!
