while we were waiting for the march of dimes walkathon (march for babies) to get underway in downtown atlanta yesterday, i had a chance to take in the view of the buildings that were damaged by the tornado that hit last month. looks like efforts to repair the broken windows is slow going, but the buildings are fine and the area is open to traffic.
we started in centennial olympic park and walked 5.2 miles around the city. my legs are a little sore today (i really need to hit the pavement instead of the treadmill more often) but it felt great to do some good, and seeing so many people and their pets out for the cause was wonderful.
around this time last year, i complained about the pollen here in atlanta. today is no different. i actually held my breath on the way to my car from my apartment. yeah, like that was gonna help. my ears, eyes and throat still itch like crazy.
i love nature, but the trees here are KILLing me.
today is my last chance. i must go.
More than 100 live amphibians amid plants, ponds and waterfalls. Also, an interactive component. The 19 species on view come from Madagascar, China, Paraguay and other countries.
i joined my brother, his coworkers and hundreds of other people on saturday for the atlanta walk to cure diabetes. we started in centennial olympic park and walked three miles around the downtown area. it was fun and i got to see more of the city without worrying about being hit by a car.

atlanta beams
finally, it rained today...for about five minutes. i was
hoping it would last a while but as soon as i started this post, the
clouds went from dark to light grey and the rain turned to mist. not
good considering the southeast is experiencing extreme drought
conditions and here in the atlanta area, we're definitely worried about our water supply:
Lake Sidney Lanier, metro Atlanta's main source of water, has about three months of storage left, according to state and federal officials.
That's three months before there's not enough water for more than 3 million metro Atlantans to take showers, flush their toilets and cook. Three months before there's not enough water in parts of the Chattahoochee River for power plants to make the steam necessary to generate electricity. Three months before part of the river runs dry.

i hope people are doing their part to reduce water usage.
seriously, do you really need to wash your car once a week? no. heck, i haven't washed my car in months. do you need to water your grass? no. it's fall, a lot of plants are turning brown. do you have to take 20 minute showers EVERY day? no. come on people, you can't possibly be that dirty. on a good day, i can shower in 5 minutes; when i have to wash my hair, less than 10 minutes (and that's with the water off while i'm in lathering mode).
and to the army corp of engineers: do we really need to protect mussel species in florida? no. for the time being, we do not need to send 3 billion gallons of water from four lakes in georgia to a river in florida, every day.
i could go on and on but the point i'm trying to get across is that we have been wasting water for years and as a community, we should have made changes a long time ago instead of waiting for the government to tell us what to do. by making a few adjustments in our daily activities, we can save a lot of water and conserve our resources. if you need help getting started, wateruseitwisely.com has 100 water-saving tips and treehugger.com has pointers on how to green your water.
and even if water is abundant where you
live, please, be a responsible consumer and use it wisely.
to the couple driving down the wrong side of the road this afternoon: sidewalks were made for pedestrians, not your car.
driving on the sidewalk AND on the wrong side of the road?
un-believable.
last week, i made it a point to redeem my sony points for a point-and-shoot camera. talk about a lot of points. anyway, i picked one, the DSC S700. i really didn't have much of a choice and wanted to use my points because they were going to expire soon. i was telling my brother about the camera this weekend and how it doesn't have a view finder, but for my point range, it was the only one i could pick. i was eyeballing a mini stereo but having a backup camera seemed like a better option.
so we get to talking a little more and he tells me that the LCD screen is going to drain my battery life (which i already knew), but then he asks, "oh, what kind of battery does it use?" he pointed out the one detail i manged to overlook--the battery type. it totally slipped my mind to make sure the camera uses a rechargeable battery. i really don't like the idea of having to buy a bunch of batteries and now i'm wondering if i should try and sell it, or should i give it a shot and just use it?
and while i have camera on the brain, here are some more spring photos i took a couple of weeks ago with my little canon s110, before the last freeze. i can't believe we went from weather in the upper 70s to temps in the 30s but we seem to be back to spring-like weather, again.
