foot in mouth

my cousin called yesterday to wish my brother a happy birthday but didn't realize he had the wrong day. before i handed the phone over, we chatted for a few minutes. seems like the only time we talk is around christmas, new years or birthdays.

me: so how is the family? how's candy doing?
cuz: you mean, cookie?
me: my bad.
cuz: she's doing okay, she's in atlanta now.
me: why is that?
cuz: (brief silence) we've been divorced for three years.
me: (fumbles for words) i'm sorry, i had no idea.
(i look over at my dad and give him the evil eye for not telling me)
cuz: it's okay, i don't think i ever told you.

well, i woke up this morning and remembered our conversation from two years ago about the divorce.

i hope this was just a case of selective memory.

i need a new body

because the one i'm in now is busted.

it keeps nibbling on food from christmas dinner; craves sweets, especially cake with whipped cream (or buttercream) frosting, custard, hot cocoa...ANYTHING with sugar; hasn't gone to the gym in a week; hasn't been motivated to do much of anything except watch movies; seems to function on 5 hours of sleep.

i feel so toxic.

and to think i'm holding off until january 1st to start my two week vegetarian diet. earlier this year i promised a friend of mine that i would give it a try but haven't so i'm giving it a go come january.

that reminds me, i still need to figure out my menu. if i plan ahead, i'm more likely to stick to the two week trial so i better start looking for recipes.

what is it with drivers not using their directionals? instead, i find people riding along side me with a look that i'm supposed to recognize as a signal to change lanes. WTF. for all i know, they could be sight seeing. i'm not psychic, and i don't remember seeing facial expressions in any driver handbook i've read. i recognize flashing lights not darting eyes, people. then again...when someone does use their directional, others take it as an indication to speed up and not let the driver into their lane.

damned if you do, damned if you don't.

frigid idgit

i opted to shiver all night instead of getting my butt out of bed to turn the heater on. i didn't get an ounce of sleep and when i checked the temperature on the local weather channel this morning, it was 24 degrees out but felt like 17 with the wind chill.

normally, i like being cold but obviously it's not conducive to a good night sleep. it makes me lazy and i won't get out of bed for my own good. this has to stop.

so, i've planned ahead for tonight. the heat is on, and it'll stay on until the weather warms up. not sure when that will be and as much as i hate the smell of warm air from central heating, my nose will have to suffer. i can't risk having another sleepless night.

can't sleep

just as i was about the head off to bed, i peaked out my window and saw that the stars were out. it was cloudy earlier but now i'm going to stay up for as long as i can to watch the geminid meteor shower.

What could be the best meteor display of the year will reach its peak on the night of Dec.13-14.
Here is what astronomers David Levy and Stephen Edberg have written of the annual Geminid Meteor Shower: "If you have not seen a mighty Geminid fireball arcing gracefully across an expanse of sky, then you have not seen a meteor."
The Geminids get their name from the constellation of Gemini, the Twins, because the meteors appear to emanate from a spot in the sky near the bright star Castor in Gemini.

Also in Gemini this month is the planet Mars, nearing a close approach to the Earth later this month, and shining brilliantly with yellow-orange hue. To be sure, Mars is certain to attract the attention of prospective Geminid watchers this upcoming week.
