i don't know what it is about today (saturday, april 7th, 2007), but i'm feeling a bit nostalgic. i was looking through my posts when i came across this one and realized it wasn't viewable, so now it is.
-----
a couple of weeks ago, i went to my first NFL gamefalcons vs.
buccaneers. the energy and excitement
from the fans and the players was an amazing sight.
i had such a
great time but going to the concession stand at half-time was a VERY
bad
idea--we missed most of the 3rd quarter.
i finally finished eragon last friday. at first i had mixed feelings when i read the first few chapters. felt like i was trying to crank up a lawn mower, pulling the cord over and over and hoping the engine would start. but that wasn't the only thing. i kept thinking to myself, "hey, some of this feels a lot like LOTR." the story finally took off when eragon’s dragon came into the picture. i loved how the two developed a bond by mentally speaking to each other. when their minds connected, i found myself finally connecting with the story. overall, the book was fun and i enjoyed it so much that i didn't want to put it down. now i’m really nervous about seeing the movie after i saw the online trailer. i’m hoping for the best...
can't wait to read eldest.
reesie
brought up an interesting idea for her nanowrimo novel as she was
trying to decide on writing in the first or third person--to switch
between different point of views for each chapter. this made me
think about photography and the camera, the eye of the viewer and the
photographer...the perspective. now i'm inspired to reread a
couple of books from a photography class i took in college...the medium is the massage: an inventory of effects and camera lucida.
definitely glad i held on to these books and i'm hoping it will help
with ideas for my own submission. wish i had started thinking
about participating in nanowrimo a while back when crystal
talked about her idea for a novel. guess it's never too late get
involved. and just goes to show that inspiration is everywhere...
catching up on a qotd:
What TV show(s) will you be watching this season? Why?
Submitted by ducnly.vox.com.
Prison Break. why? a couple of hot guys.
Supernatural. i like the humor and again, a couple of hot guys.
Lost. i got hooked from season one...although last season left me feeling like the show may not last too long. i'm just not feeling the mystery and suspense as much.
Battlestar Galactica. it's a fracking good show.
Boston Legal, House. love the dialogue.
oh, can't forget Grey's Anatomy, Numbers, Ghost Whisperer, Medium, Nip/Tuck, Smallville, Hero, and Jericho. thank god for tivo and dvds!
What's the last thing you usually do or think about before you fall asleep?
what i usually think..."i just want to fall asleep within the next 20 minutes, please." then i set my alarm for 5:50am and say to myself, "you HAVE to go to the gym in the morning." after i switch the alarm to music mode, i try to fall asleep to classical music on the public radio station and set the sleep timer for 30-40 minutes.
Bodies...The Exhibition. I would recommend going but it’s definitely NOT for the faint of heart. It’ll give you a case of the heebee-jeebies seeing bodies crafted and positioned in a way that almost gives life to the dead. The exhibit was in Atlanta until Sept 12th and I knew what I was going to see . . . and it was creepy for a few minutes. But the more I looked, the more I was fascinated. I couldn't think about the controversy, since I wanted to appreciate the complexity of the human body as a machine and see what makes us all alike. At least that’s what I told myself.
There were nine rooms and each gave you a look into what we’re “normally” made up of—tissue, nerves, arteries, veins, bones, muscles and so on. We saw the effects of disease and cancer on organs like the lung, stomach, thyroid and liver. A lot of the lungs we saw were tarred from smoking and reminded me of a filter from an A/C unit packed with black dust. It made me think about why we make the choices that we do when it comes to our health--be it social pressures or economic hardships. Another room about the reproductive system made a few stomachs turn. I saw a lady sitting on a bench trying to catch her breath as her daughter asked if she was okay. Then I realized why after I looked into one of the display cases and saw fetuses.
I left with a visual understanding that our bodies are what make us the same. We function because of an intricate and balanced series of systems. Nerves telling muscles to contract causing bones to move. Nerves telling muscles to contract causing the heart to beat. We live because of our bodies.
When I asked my brother what he thought about the exhibition he said, "It was interesting. Disturbing. But interesting.” Yeah, that pretty much sums it up.
[edit]
In light of recent news, I feel terrible for brushing aside the controversy surrounding this exhibit.
What's up?
Just got home from the bookstore. I
always feel useless after dim sum and could have spent the entire day
lounging in one of those plushy chairs. Anyway, I picked up a
copy of Eragon to read before the movie comes out. Now I'm going
to put on a pot of water for tea and sit on the balcony to do
some reading. I really should clean my room but that can
wait--don't want to waste the fabulous weather we're having.
What do you collect?
I really don't collect much nowadays--not enough room to keep things around for too long. If you'd have asked me 15 years ago, I would have said barbie dolls and comic books. But that all stopped when I went off to college. *sigh*
I've always wanted to know "what we are"... and I think I found the answer.
Now all I have to do is figure out how many times this guy says the word "monkey".
I always feel like I'm the last to know about
anything in the book world. I was watching a segment on CNN this
morning about "brain power". In a nutshell, Sanjay Gupta talked
about the connection between creativity and genius, then went on about
a boy in Montana who started writing a book before he graduated high
school--he didn't even have a drivers license by that time. I've
never heard of Christopher Paolin or his books but now I'm
curious. Has anyone read Eragon?
The movie snippets looked amazing (very LOTR and Chronicles of
Narnia) and is coming to the big screen in December. I'm thinking
I want to take a crack and read it before seeing the movie...
