Y'know, I've never gotten into the black-eyed peas and collard greens tradition, but it always makes me homesick whenever I hear about others who do. Weird, huh?

Good luck on your veggie-journey! Are you winging it for the most part or are you using cookbooks to help plan your meals?

ah yes, the soup-base blunder. even when a restaurant makes a 'vegetarian' dish or soup, my mom always has to ask if it's made with vegetable stock . . . not every place will think to use it instead of chicken or beef.

"...always makes me homesick whenever I hear about others who do. Weird, huh?"

weird, and interesting--i wonder why.

as for the veggie journey, i'm winging most of it but also modifying some recipes from a couple of cookbooks i have.

it's only day two and i may have to reclassify my diet to a semi-vegetarian. i hadn't considered that eggs, milk and cheese would still be part of my diet along with fish, so i'm not sure it could be considered pesci. oh, well. the main thing for me is staying away from beef, poultry and pork for 30 days. *crosses fingers*
LOL, you could have warned me sooner, erin. ;) i actually picked up some vegetable and seafood base last night though.
sorry. :) anything else you need to know?

also, i find it rather amusing that you're flailing around finding recipes and stuff for this pesci-vegetarian adventure . . . when except for the chicken part, that's what i eat all the time! i can't eat anything with red meat (including stocks) or it makes me really sick - i never really liked it to start with so i just stopped eating it. and i really just don't like pork. never did.

fish however, i love . . . especially since every kind is so different. much more worth eating than boring chicken. although chicken is good when cooked in fun ways . . . but given a choice, it's either fish or vegetarian.

if you find good recipes, send them my way. i have no idea how to cook really, but i now may have a reason to learn. :)

Everyone knows you have to have black-eyed peas on New Years Day for good luck! We had ours in chilequiles for breakfast! :D

Happy New Year, Ang!

what an adventure this is turning out to be. first of all, i never should have "labeled" my diet. the more research i do about vegetarian(ism), the more i realize there is no way i'd be able to avoid food with animal products. all i want to do is avoid certain meats, for one month. and i thought this was going to be easy, but i didn't consider reading tiny print on ingredient labels to make sure there isn't any sort of meat product in it. feels like i need to start carrying a magnifying glass!

oh, and i'm cooking basa fish tonight. i don't have a recipe, just going to use whatever spices i have and see what happens. =\

"...black-eyed peas on New Years Day for good luck!"

right on! but chilequiles? i'm not sure i know the dish but i bet it was good. :) happy new year, steve!

good luck with that diet! :) i don't eat a whole lot of meat normally, but i don't think i could give it up completely...
yeah, not having korean bbq for a month is going to be PAINFUL. *sigh*
Whenever Joe sees your noodle and soup photos he starts drooling. He thinks you should come up and stay with us for a month and do all the cooking. ;) This from a man who adores cooking--I have to fight him for the stove! But he is a man that loves his meat so maybe he'll want to wait till you are back on the chicken stock!
Beware some packaged veggie stocks are super gross, the pacific one is alright I seem to remember. Moosewood makes a good soup cookbook. It has salads and snacky stuff too.
LOL, i think i should come up and stay for both your cooking. i want buche de noel. :)
my friend from college had the moosewood cookbook and i have a couple of recipes for stuffed peppers and vegetarian chili that i loved. just need to round up the ingredients and give it a whirl!
