is that a dead bird?
that's what i asked myself as i slowly approached a lump of feathers on the ground while i was walking poa poa yesterday.
the thing is, my brother and i were heading to my car last thursday when a bird...a TURKEY flew right by us in the parking lot. so of course i thought what was on the ground was a part of the bird.
all sorts of scenarios crossed my mind as to how it died and made it to the breezeway. perhaps it was hit by a car. the fact that there was no blood on the ground should have been my first clue that it wasn't road kill. but my mind wandered a little more and as soon as i saw the stick protruding from its side, i thought some nut job with a bow and arrow decided to hunt the bird down. then the thought came back that it must have been hit by a car...after being shot by an arrow.
luckily, that wasn't the case. i went in for a closer look and realized the mass was a feather duster (probably ostrich feathers).
my imagination really gets the best of me sometimes.
and why on earth was there a turkey on the loose in the apartment complex is beyond me.

Wait -- turkeys can fly??!?!?!? Who knew?
Love those pics, and glad that your duster wasn't roadkill...
and i didn't know turkeys flew. is that dumb of me? hehe :)
laurel, while i was trying to snag these shots, i thought of you and your pelican photos. it was such a pain in the ass trying to get close to this bird. all i kept thinking was how much i wanted a telephoto lens.
I was so amazed by the amazing flying turkey, that I had to look up this mystery. I found that yes, turkeys can fly - at least, WILD turkeys can. Up to 55 mph!
You take the bestest photos.
i checked out that link and i'm having a hard time picturing this bird roosting in a tree. amazing.
