This looks really interesting. I used to have arguments about this sort of thing with some of my black co-workers at my last job before school. Of a total of ten guys, one of them had two parents who were married. Several of them had no idea who their fathers were, and most of them had girlfriends though that never stopped them from chatting up a pretty girl.

I also saw a great piece recently (and I can't remember where) on a woman who had set up a mentoring program so that black youths had successful male role models during their formative years to prove to them that success was indeed an option for them, that dealing drugs, etc wasn't the only path open to them.

If I remember where I read it I'll send a link.

And going back a bit to Sure Shot by the Beastie Boys in 1994.

I want to say a little something that's long overdue
the disrespect to women has got to be through
to all the mothers and sisters and the wives and friends
I want to offer my love and respect to the end
My white butt and I will defer to you, a true soul/seoul momma, on this subject. What you say shall be gospel.
